Educando held its 15th Education Leadership Award Dinner on October 15, 2019 to pay tribute to Carlos Labarthe (President, Compartamos-Gentera) and Marcelo Gleiser (Physics and Astronomy Professor, Dartmouth College). More than 225 guests assembled at New York City’s Mandarin Oriental where funds were raised in support Educando’s mission of providing high-quality and results-driven education in Mexico and Brazil.

Carlos Labarthe Costas is President of Compartamos, group that is listed on the Mexican Stock Exchange and which groups eight companies in order to work for financial inclusion.

Three of these companies are focused on offering financial services for the underserved segment in Mexico, Peru, and Guatemala, under the brand of Compartamos. The other five companies are focused on different financial services, formed by Aterna, insurance agent; Yastás, banking correspondent administrator; Intermex, payer of family remittances; Fiinlab, innovation laboratory which purpose is creating financial solutions enabled by technology; and Fundación Gentera, focused on the social responsibility actions, its main cause, the education.

Carlos Labarthe is Industrial Engineer from Universidad Anáhuac and has studies on Senior Management by Instituto Panamericano de Alta Dirección de Empresas, (IPADE). He has also studied different programs at The Economics Institute in Boulder, Harvard Business School, and Singularity University.

He is the founder director of Compartamos and Ignia. He is also chairman of Kipling Group and is a member of the board of Educando by Worldfund. In the academic field, he has taught at different institutions, such as Universidad Iberoamericana, the Social Training Course (CUFOSO) -of the Unión Social de Empresarios de México (USEM) – and the Harvard Business School.

In 2015, he was recognized by the Great Place to Work Institute and the Wobi Magazine as The Most Trusted CEO in Mexico.

Marcelo Gleiser

Marcelo Gleiser, a native of Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, is the Appleton Professor of Natural Philosophy and a professor of Physics and Astronomy at Dartmouth College. He specializes in the big questions about existence, including the origin of the universe, of matter, and of life. Marcelo is a fellow of the American Physical Society and the recipient of the Presidential Faculty Fellows Award from the White House and the National Science Foundation. He is 2019 Templeton Prize laureate, an honor he shares with Mother Thereza, the Dalai Lama, and Desmond Tutu.

A leading public intellectual in the US and abroad, Marcelo is actively engaged in the public understanding of science. He has five published books in English and another nine in Portuguese, with translations into 12 languages as well as hundreds of essays in newspapers, magazines, and online.

He was the co-founder and, for eight years, a regular contributor of the NPR blog 13.7 Cosmos and Culture. Currently, he writes weekly essays for the online magazine Orbiter in his blog 13.8. Marcelo wrote for twenty years for Folha de São Paulo, producing over 1000 essays on science and culture. His TV series in Brazil have been watched by more than 30 million people, making him an iconic scientist in his native country.

Marcelo has been a generous champion of Educando and its STEM Brasil program, having served for six years as a member of Educando’s Board of Directors.
