Educando and ICE partnership; expanding together STEM Brasil in 10 Brazilian states
In 2017, STEM Brasil began a large-scale expansion with the support of our long-time partner, the Institute of Co-responsibility for Education (ICE). This collaboration was a result of the recent reform to secondary education by the Ministry of Education, in which public schools become full-time, extending the time spent in school to an average of 7 hours a day. The partnership between Worldfund and ICE works to make the most of these 7 hours by offering STEM Brasil, a program that proposes methodological innovations to science and math teachers, raising student learning and comprehension levels.
The first steps for this expansion were taken in 2016, when Worldfund and ICE collaborated to bring the program to the states of Espírito Santo, Maranhão and Paraíba, impacting 21 schools. In 2017, the activities spread even further, covering nine more states; Acre, Amapá, Goiás, Mato Grosso, Mato Grosso do Sul, Rio Grande do Norte, Rondônia, Sergipe and Tocantins. This growth resulted in 1,092 science and math teachers in 156 public schools being trained by STEM Brasil, impacting 75,855 high school students.
In 2018, 10 states continue to participate in STEM Brasil as a result of Worldfund and ICE partnership. Throughout this two-year training cycle for 2018-2019, 97 schools will be joining the program, bringing together 679 new physics, chemistry, biology and math teachers to receive STEM Brasil training, which includes monitoring and support.
